Our curriculum

Curriculum Areas

 

During the Autumn term, we focus on the following areas:

 

Religious Education - The stories of the Old Testament which teach us about God and his special friends. We share stories such as Jonah and the Whale, David and Goliath and Abraham and Isaac. 

 

Maths - We focus on place value, partitioning numbers to 100 in different ways, addition and subtraction and multiplication and division.

At home you could help your child by: 

-Counting in 1s to 100 forward and backwards

-Practising number bonds to 10 and 20

-Drawing a number using Tens and Ones

-Count in 2s, 5s, 10s and 3s

 

Literacy

We practise letter formation through handwriting sessions and independent sentence writing skills through focusing on the use of accurate punctuation. We learn about different sentence types such as statements and questions and build upon writing expanded noun phrases. We also share stories with familiar settings and stories which illustrate and emphasise our Catholic Social Teaching focus of Family and Community and the Poor and Vulnerable.

 

Building the Kingdom 

In Geography lessons, we learn about our local area and use our observations to identify human and physical features. We use aerial maps to study our area and develop our understanding of the use of simple maps. 

In History we learn about significant people in local history and find out about the effect they had on the local area.

 

In Science lessons, we recap on our previous learning from Year One through revisiting the seasons and different types of animals, including humans. We also develop our scientific enquiry skills. 

 

In the Spring term, we focus on the following areas:

 

Religious Education - We share many of Jesus' parables and miracles and focus on lent and Easter time.

We deepen our understanding of the Catholic Social teaching theme of Solidarity and the common good. We share stories which demonstrate and illustrate how we can work together as a community and support those in need.

 

Maths - We focus on 2d and 3d shape, multiplication as repeated addition and division strategies.

At home you could help your child by: 

-Recapping on the names of 2d shapes

-Encouraging your child to identify 2d shapes within their environment

-Reinforcing the names of 3d shapes and encouraging your child to spot 3d shapes within their environment and describe their properties - vertices, faces, edges 

-Count in 2s, 5s, 10s and 3s

 

Literacy

We continue to practise letter formation through handwriting sessions and independent sentence writing skills through focusing on the use of accurate punctuation. 

We introduce the children to different genres of writing such as informal letter writing and diary writing. We develop the children's ability to write in first person and present and past tense.

 

Building the Kingdom 

In Geography lessons, we learn about the seven continent and five oceans, the equator and the North and South Pole.

In History we learn about significant explorers from the past and the ways they helped to shape the future.

 

In Science lessons, we learn about living things and their habitats, animal adaptations and food chains.
